General Questions About Koh Chang

Where is Koh Chang located?

Koh Chang is Thailand’s second-largest island, located in the Gulf of Thailand near the Cambodian border. It’s part of Trat province and famous for lush jungle, beaches, and waterfalls.

How do I get to Koh Chang?

Most travelers arrive via minivan or taxi from Bangkok (5–6 hours) to the ferry pier in Trat, followed by a 30-minute ferry. Travel guide 🔗

What is the best time to visit Koh Chang?

The dry season from October to May offers great weather, calm seas, and ideal diving conditions.

Are there ATMs and shops on the island?

Yes, you’ll find ATMs, 7-Eleven stores, pharmacies, dive shops, and local markets throughout the island.

Do I need a scooter to get around?

Scooters are the easiest and most flexible way to explore Koh Chang.
Rental prices range from approximately 150–400 THB per day.
Taxis (songthaew) charge around 50–800 THB per ride depending on distance.
Private car rentals are available and cost around 800–1,500 THB per day (as of 2025).

Important: Wearing a helmet is mandatory in Thailand – even if it doesn’t always look like it 😉
You also need a valid international driver’s license (IDP) to legally ride a scooter here.
Most scooters are 125–160cc and require full attention and responsibility.
Make sure your license covers this engine size – many travel insurances won’t pay without it!

Is Koh Chang family-friendly?

Yes! It’s a relaxed island with safe beaches and activities for all ages – from snorkeling to jungle trekking.

Is it safe to swim and snorkel?

Yes, swimming is generally safe from October to May during the dry season.
In the green season (June to September), rip currents can appear – so caution is advised.

Snorkeling directly from the beach is usually not possible, as most beaches have only sand and no reefs or rocks.
To enjoy snorkeling, we recommend taking a boat or kayak to nearby small islands and reefs.

What should I wear when visiting temples or government offices? 🛕🏛️

Thailand is quite relaxed, but when visiting temples or official places like immigration or police stations, there’s a basic dress code to follow:

  • Temples 🛕: Covered shoulders and knees (no tank tops or short shorts). Avoid transparent clothing. Remove shoes before entering 👣.
  • Government offices 🏛️: Casual but respectful clothing. No beachwear, sleeveless tops, or flip-flops.
  • Men 👨: T-shirt or polo, long shorts or trousers, closed shoes or sandals with heel straps.
  • Women 👩: Blouse or T-shirt, long skirt or trousers, no cleavage or spaghetti straps.

💡 Tip: Always carry a lightweight scarf or sarong – very handy in temples or chilly air-conditioned buildings!
