How a Try Dive Works at Chang Diving – Your First Underwater Adventure (2025, Koh Chang)
Ever dreamed of exploring the underwater world, but not sure if you’re ready for a full scuba course? At Chang Diving Center on Koh Chang, we offer a safe and exciting way to experience scuba diving for the first time – with a Try Dive.
What Is a Try Dive?
A Try Dive is your chance to experience the magic of breathing underwater without needing any prior certification. It’s perfect for beginners, non-swimmers, and anyone who wants to try scuba diving in a safe, guided environment.
Important: A Try Dive is not a certification course and cannot be credited towards an Open Water Diver course – neither internationally nor at other dive centers or agencies.
However, if you complete your Try Dive with us at Chang Diving Center and after decide to continue with an Open Water Diver course at our center, we can recognize parts of your Try Dive experience towards your certification (based on instructor evaluation).

Step-by-Step – Your Try Dive Adventure
Unlike many other centers, we don’t use a pool session – you will dive directly from our comfortable dive boat, the Pirm Udom Sub! Here’s how your day will look:
- Hotel Pickup: Depending on your hotel location, we pick you up between 7:15 AM and 7:45 AM.
- 08:15 AM: Departure of our dive boat from the pier
- Briefing: Safety basics, breathing techniques, equalization tips, and underwater hand signals
- Dive 1: Your first dive at a shallow, calm reef (maximum depth around 5 meters)
- Surface Break: Relax on the boat for about 1 hour with drinks and fresh fruits
- Dive 2: A second dive – slightly deeper (maximum 10–12 meters) to explore even more marine life!
- Return: Arrival back at the pier between 2:00 PM and 4:00 PM, depending on the day’s conditions and dive sites

Do You Need to Be a Good Swimmer?
No, you don’t need to be a strong swimmer to participate in a Try Dive. Basic comfort in the water is enough. Your instructor will be right by your side at all times to assist you and ensure your safety.
However: It’s definitely an advantage if you can swim! You’ll feel more relaxed and enjoy your dives even more.
Important for Upgrading: If you decide to upgrade from Try Dive to a full Open Water Diver course, you must be able to:
- Swim at least 200 meters without any flotation aids
- Tread water (or float) for a minimum of 10 minutes
These swimming requirements are mandatory for certification – but for your first Try Dive experience, no formal swimming test is needed.
How Long Does a Try Dive Take?
The full Try Dive experience takes a whole boat day. Our boat departs once a day at 8:15 AM and returns between 2 PM and 4 PM.
Dive Times: Each dive usually lasts between 50 and 60 minutes, depending on your air consumption, comfort, and conditions.
Between the two dives, you will enjoy a surface interval of about 1 hour to relax, hydrate, and prepare for the next dive.
